Thailand’s imports have developed in tandem with exports and domestic demand. The major Thai imports were raw materials and intermediate goods, recording an average of 43.6% of total imports during 1995-2009. The main product categories were electronic parts, chemicals and plastic materials, and iron and steel. Imports of capital goods were also substantial, with an average of 28.9% of total imports during 1995-2009, mainly driven by industrial machinery, tools and parts, and electrical machinery and parts. Moreover, as Thailand is not an oil-producing country, crude oil imports were also significant, with an average of 10.3% of total imports during 1995-2009. Figure 5 presents the share of Thai imports classified by product categories. Regarding product origin, Thailand mainly imports from Japan, ASEAN, the Middle East and China. Following the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, a slowdown in exports and investment and decline in manufacturing production, capacity utilisation, and private consumption resulted in an import slump.
