E. Another Scripture dealing with the principle of accountability is found in LUKE 9. The first part of the chapter tells us that Jesus sent out the twelve apostles to preach and heal. Notice what it says in VERSE 10- “And when the apostles returned, they GAVE AN ACCOUNT TO HIM OF ALL THEY HAD DONE.” NAS
F. The sin of Eli in I SAMUEL 2 was that he allowed his sons to do evil in the sight of the Lord, and for that, the Lord put a curse against his whole house. The principle seen here is the same: If I’m in authority over you, I must make you accountable to me, to make sure things are being done correctly, or else God holds me responsible.
G. In JOSHUA 7, the sin of one man, Achan, cursed the whole nation (I CORINTHIANS 5:6- a little leaven leavens the whole lump). The Lord revealed to Joshua what the problem was, and Achan came under judgment. When the sin of the one affects the whole, Joshua had a right to pray, hear from God and intervene in the situation to protect the congregation of Israel. Joshua had the responsibility and the right to make Achan accountable. This is for the protection of the person and the congregation.
H. In the natural, a shepherd is responsible to watch over the sheep and keep them in line. When one wanders off, the owner of the sheep holds that shepherd responsible to get the lost sheep back into the fold. If a sheep is continually wandering, discipline is needed. If a sheep is missing at feeding time, it can only mean two possible things:
1. The sheep, through inattention, wandered off ; or
2. The sheep is sick
In either situation, the owner holds the shepherd accountable for the welfare of the sheep.
I. In the spiritual realm, the owner is the Lord, the shepherd is the pastor (pastor literally means “shepherd”). There is no less accountability of the pastor toward God, and there is no less accountability of that sheep toward the shepherd. The world has already learned this, and the church must learn this if we’re to have prosperous, growing congregations.
J. PROVERBS 27:23 says, “Know well the condition of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds.” NAS Here we can see that a shepherd has the responsibility before God to “get into” people’s lives and monitor what and how they’re doing.
