Modifying plant defences or growth rates
would create a patchy distribution of plant phenotypes, and thus
greater overall variation for insects to utilise (Karban & Baldwin,
1997). Finally, soil organisms could alter both plant interand
intra-species variation in traits that directly or indirectly
affect herbivores and other insects resulting in greater insect
diversity (Fig. 3).
