Descriptive and reliability statistics were computed for individual
items and the forty-item scale. The descriptive statistics
are presented in exhibit 2. Based on inspection of these results,
five items (PSM 7, 14, 15, 22, 37) were dropped from further
analysis because they had low variances and were weakly correlated
with the overall scale. The item-total correlations for these
items ranged from . l l to .26, well below the average for other
items. The deletion of five items left thirty-five items for the next
stage of analysis.
