The great balls of the 20th century were the expression of a sumptuous art of living. Organized around extravagant themes, they brought prestigious guests to exclusive locations in the name of high culture and joyful celebration. Van Cleef & Arpels was a faithful witness to these occasions, where its creations sparkled on a host of magnificent costumes.
Today, the Maison pays homage to them with a stunning collection of High Jewelry: Bals de Légende.
The origins of the ball lie in Antiquity. Despite being restricted by Christianity, costume balls continued into the medieval period and down through the centuries. The passion for allegory during the Renaissance only increased their popularity. Opulent balls spread throughout Europe and became a tradition in Italy and in the court of the French kings. By the mid 19th century, formal costume balls had been adopted by American high society too. The stage was set for the dazzling follies of the 20th century.
Of the many balls held in this heyday, Van Cleef & Arpels has chosen five: the Great Ball in Imperial St. Petersburg, the Ball of the Century in Venice, the Oriental Ball in Paris, the Black and White Ball in New York, and the Proust Ball in Paris. Their different hosts, locations, themes, and atmospheres have inspired the exquisite pieces which make up this unique High Jewelry collection.
