Oimatsu-Dori was once the bustling front approach to Osaka Temmangu Shrine. The street was named after Oimatsu Jinja Shrine, which is today enshrined at Osaka Temmangu. It is said that Oimatsu (meaning "old pine tree") shrine was named by Empress Jingu, who built the shrine near a gigantic pine tree in a town close to the current Oimatsu-Dori, as a token of gratitude, because the pine tree had sheltered the empress's vessel from the wind and waves, enabling her to land when she was making her return voyage from the Chikushi Region. Currently the street has around 80 antique shops and galleries, and attracts not only dedicated antique fans but also strollers drawn by the area's nostalgic atmosphere.
