The controlled use of increased oxygen in this population did not alter the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity. So the use of supplemental oxygen, particularly in infants with preexisting retinopathy, does not increase injury to the eyes. Identifying the concerns and issues of families, developing a sound understanding of the available information on the use of supplemental oxygen, and communicating that information to families may improve the families’ understanding and diminish their anxiety. Although infants receiving supplemental oxygen are frequently some of the healthier patients in our busy intensive care units, their responses to the environment, as well as their parents’s concerns, should not be overlooked.
