Lesson VOC 35
Task: Test electrical connections.
Prerequisites: ADT 5, SEN 13, VOC 5
Concept: The most important aspect in this training is the use of only low voltage and amperage DC (direct current) electricity, such as that found in a flashlight battery. Under no circumstances should AC or household types of power be introduced. The concept is that in some work environments, electrical equipment must be tested for continuity, meaning that the wires are connected from one component to another, before it is shipped or formally assembled. The instrument to be used (an ohmmeter) can be purchased or made using a flashlight battery, a flashlight bulb, and some wire assembled so that the light will light when the wires are placed across a piece of metal.
Behavioral Objective: When trained by a supervisor to check the continuity of an electric circuit, the student will independently use an instrument to verify the proper connections to a 95% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: An ohmmeter or a homemade continuity tester as described in the concept section, a metal plate, and sample items (both "good" and "bad") to be tested.
Task Analysis:
1. Introduce the student to the instrument that he or she will use to verify that the electrical connections are complete. Using the metal plate, physically guide the student through the process of making the light go on or the meter register that a potential for electrical current is present.
2. Continue Step 1, reducing physical assistance until the student can test the connection with only verbal prompting.
3. Using the concept from Step 2, set up two sample items, one that is "good" and one that is "bad." Guide the student, as needed, in testing both the good and bad circuits. Randomly present the two items and work with the student until he or she can discriminate between the two items.
4. Provide the student with a number of sample circuits, having him or her place "good" circuits in one pile and "bad" circuits in another. (Note. Actual testing aspects will depend on the specific work activity being performed.)
