The extent of lipid peroxidation was
assessed by a TBARS assay which measures the levels of MDA. An
increase in the MDA level is indicative of elevated lipid peroxidation,
especially in green leaves which have relatively high levels
of polyunsaturated fatty acids with three or more double bonds.
The results reported here show a gradual increase in the amount
of lipid peroxidation products with progressing plant development
with the highest increase occurring at late stages of the senescence
process when the amount of LPPs was three times higher than on
the first day of the measurement
