There are two broad types of advance directives. The first is the instructional directive, which has several subtypes including the living will, the medical directive, and the do -not-resuscitate order. Instructional directives usually give guidance about the type and amount of care that the person desires should he become in the durable power of attorney for health care, also known as the healthcare proxy. DPAHC documents usually identify an agent known as either a healthcare proxy or a durable power of attorney for health care to serve as a surrogate for decision making. This section will discuss each of these, as well as other relevant issues pertaining to advance directives.
