They show chemolithotrophic, chemoorganotrophic, or chemomixotrophic growth . Autotrophic growth occurs with thiousulfate and H2, but with sulfate there is very little growth. Under hetreotrophic conditions formate, lactate glucose, starch, and proteins are used as electron donors and sulfate, uslfite, or thiouslfate can function as electron acceptorss.
