To create a printed page, a light-sensitive cylinder is made positively charged, attracting particles of toner, which have a negative charge. The original document is scanned and the laser shines on to the cylinder where the white spaces will be, causing the cylinder to lose its charge in those places, thereby losing the toner. As the paper passes by the cylinder, a strong positive charge is generated behind the paper, causing the remaining toner to be attracted to the paper. It is then fixed there with heat and pressure.
