Alternative education is not a fashion
Acting as a present Director of the Institute of Thai Home Education, Mr. Yutthachai Chalermchai, who used to homeschool both of his sons has concluded in his report on a research on alternative education for well being (2010) that:
Innovations or the qualifications of alternative education school incorporate:
1. Give value to human and diversity in order to develop the learners to become a complete human being, to have freedom of thoughts, happiness and creativity so that the learners are able to succeed naturally and achieve their full potential.
2. The curriculum covers holistic living, balances academic, life, knowledge and ethic as well as western and eastern wisdom, universality and Thainess.
3. Develop curriculum according to contemporary educational philosophy such as Waldorf, Montessori, Neo-Humanist, constructionism and Buddhism, etc.
4. Place an emphasis on learning method rather than knowledge. The learners are allowed to choose and keep abreast with knowledge development to develop their own learning method with an emphasis on learning from reality and ability to practice in daily life. They should be happy with their learning and love to learn from things that they like and dislike so that they are able to learn by themselves and learn continuously for the rest of their lives.
5. Be a continuous learning process which allows authentic development with a realization of individual’s uniqueness or difference of skill, intellect, competency, capability and interest of the learners. Assessment uses a variety of both formal and informal techniques to truly develop each individual/group. The opportunities are given to everyone so that they can achieve in learning with equal opportunities.Based on the aforementioned criteria, alternative education reflects the guideline of management adopted by each school, organization or community where opts for education management according to the real meaning.
That is, development of real and complete human which is based on the concept and belief according to the learning philosophy one perceives. This approach permits diversity to offer ways to those who have different concepts, believes and desire with freedom.
Mr. Yutthachai also pointed out in the same report that the alternative education is a new paradigm to inspire six turning points of education:
1. First: Education aims to perfect human.Education is not merely for citizen to respond to the economic development plan of the government. The way of development is a result of learning for a perfect man who can overcome animal instinct and detach from selfishness.
2. Second: Education offers a wide variety of choices which is a natural state. As a substitute to a reproduction by the machine, it is a delicate work of refined bond between spirit and leaning potential inside each individual to be as one. Like the saying “cutting the shoes to fit the foot not cutting the foot to fit the shoes.”
3. Third: Education is to create a learning program which allows balance and integration. Education is not by reciting from any particular book but it is a way to learn for prosperity of life. The essence or content covers holistic life of academic and life style, knowledge, ethic, western and eastern wisdoms and combination of universality and Thainess. Also, community curriculum is also given priority.
4. Fourth: Education is creating a learning method appropriate to the nature of learning of human. It is not merely knowledge but a way to learn. Learning method is to keep pace with ever changing world knowledge and life which is getting more complex. The learners are equipped with facility to create their own choice and learning method with a focus on learning from the reality which can be applied in daily life. By doing so, they are content with the learning. As a result, they love to learn from what they like and dislike and earn skills to learn by themselves and for life.
5. Fifth: Education is self-discovery which paves way to success based on the learners’ potential. The learning is not a war for fighting, competition and elimination but it is a magnet which draws everyone by respect of dignity and capability of everyone. A concept and assessment and evaluation methods need to be changed and an attention need to be placed on holistic evaluation and assessment or authentic assessment of the learners to correspond to the content and learning process regardless of central standard alone.
6. Sixth: Education is by the community for the community. It is not a sign of authoritarian by the government but it is a basic right of the people who can choose for their own future by themselves. Education must enable them to survive and live with dignity in their homeland. If the community is regarded as first priority, we can identify network and local resources as a support for the community. Quality control can also be easily performed as the community can notice the results of the learners who are their own children.
Due to the above rationale, education is to develop the perfect human which is not just a turning point of education paradigm but also an important goal to grow the potential of people to be able to live with the changing world.
Commingling diversity to become oneAt the turning point of a challenging century towards education for the survival of mankind in an era of materialism, Thai Tai School Network, a gathering of Thai schools in quest of alternatives of education management with a main aim to develop human was formed. Every school attempts to achieve the real education and access to real nature of human beings and crack their questions:
to whom education does address?
When does the education occur?
How do the children learn and what they should learn?
And as the world knowledge and the solution are all connected, but why does the learning and teaching is distinctively separated into particular subject?
Who should asses the learning outcome?
The network started from knowledge sharing among Alternative Schools Group in the middle of preparing for presentation their innovation under the topic of “Leaning for Thai” in Rapee Seminar Day on 15 December 2008 at Thailand Cultural Center. The project was a result of mutual cooperation between Arsomsilp Institute, The Contemplative Education Center at Mahidol University and Thai Health Promotion Foundation to express gratefulness to Prof. Dr. Rapee Sakrik to link the learning to the development of soul and intellect. With ideas, dreams and inspiration of the friends of education: Tor See School; Children Village School; Metha International School; Roong Aroon School; Chitmate School (pre-primary), Sattaya Sai School; Wansawangjit School; Darun Sikhalai School; Banrak Kindergarten; Samma Sikkha School; Siam Sam Tri School; and Pleon Patthana School, the network gradually took shape and the concept has been strengthened with a focus to develop human and to lead the society to peace.
Amidst a compelling capitalist trend, the Thai Tai Network and more and more friends have joined hands on their journey at a steady pace; they act as a pivotal mechanism in the society to thrust education for human development at the widest scale as possible. A true meaning of education Today, Thai Tai School Network may be another choice which differentiates itself from education business and is about to unveil to the society that learning only “knowledge” is not “learning to grow from inside”, a definition of Sikkha or education in its origin meaning. New education planners today also regard that education management needs to take into consideration the growth of the learners i.e. creating learning process to let them grow physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally at the same time.
This is holistic education which facilitates the learners to take part in their own learning by their own understanding. By definition and practice of alternative education, these schools are example of the schools which wholeheartedly commit in adhering to the national education standard. Namely, they produce fine people who are academically successful and happy through the learning process placing the learners as the first priority together with curriculum management and creation of learning environment which supports the learners to naturally develop their own potential.
The Network presents practicality of main ideology of national education management which states lifelong education, and creation of Thai society to become a learning society. This type of education promotes life quality development and the society having a balance of intellect, ethic and culture. Perhaps, not a perfect way yet, the originated pattern is somehow a mutual endeavor to develop education at its best under restriction of conditions and resources in the Thai society. Such attempts have also given rise to a process and education innovation that best exemplifies the way to develop quality personnel in the society in a number of ways.
The birth of Thai Tai School Network ignites the ideas and practices that invite the society to progress along the real educational road and return to the actual learning method that pays attention to holistic human development without sorting out the subjects from life, culture from learning. It is rather a way to fabricate learning as our culture through making the learning to be a part of life possible. (1999 A.D.) was enacted which led to educational revolution – a giant wind of change which has just blown. If the revolutionary wave of education in the first decade born out of the 1997 Constitution is the wind that has just blown, the 2007 Constitution, the present constitution must be an origin of the second wave continued from the first. What is worth observing is that the present constitution adds “an alternative
