Today, municipal landfill leachates are often co-treated with
municipal waste water but on-site treatment has also been
introduced during the last decade. In many cases biological
methods, including treatment wetlands, alone or in combination
with other techniques have been used to successfully remove
target pollutants such as nitrogen and organic material. They may
also reduce persistent organic pollutants and elements including
heavy metals in the effluent. These treatment wetlands have also in
Sweden, in spite of the cold climate, been shown to reduce the
target contaminants i.e. nitrogen and organic material persistent organic pollutants and metals.
