from the Blue Book, we contacted each company to obtain the name of the
top ranking HRM officer. In some smaller companies, this person was the
president. We then mailed a short description of the study and followed
it up with a telephone contact with each potential respondent. Each HRM
officer was then mailed a comprehensive survey seeking a variety of organizational
level information (including driver-related human resource
policies and practices and organizational effectiveness) in the context of
the management of permanent full-time drivers. The HRM officer was
instructed to complete the survey himself/herself and/or to have the most
knowledgeable people in the company complete relevant sections. Questionnaires
were returned by 326 respondents, yielding a 28.4% response
rate.
