1. Local catchments
With separate systems for drainage and sewerage, Singapore’s rainwater is collected via a comprehensive network of drains, rivers and canals, and stored in 17 reservoirs.
Today, its water catchment area represents two-thirds of Singapore’s land surface, and the aim is to grow this to 90 percent by 2060.
Creating Marina Barrage, the island’s 15th reservoir and its first in the city centre, involved damming the mouth of the Marina Channel. The barrage acts as a flood-control mechanism for nearby low-lying city areas, in addition to boosting Singapore’s water supply.
