At the same time, it has been observed that the Newton-based solution scheme behaves better for α ¼ 0 than for α ¼ 1. Specifically, in more severe lubrication conditions (i.e., for higher loads and for lower sliding speeds), the Newton scheme did not converge for α ¼ 1, while such problems have not been encountered for α ¼ 0. It is thus concluded that the choice of α ¼ 0, i.e., S ¼ Pðγl Þ, is preferable, and that scheme is used in the 3D example that follows.
