Participants were scheduled for follow-up assessments
3 months after counselling. They received 100 South
African Rand (approximately US $12 at the time of the
study) to compensate for completing the baseline and
returning to the clinic for the follow-up assessment.
Following the 3-month follow-up, participants in the
health education control condition were offered the
experimental HIV risk reduction intervention. All study
procedures were approved by the Human Sciences
Research Council Research Ethics Committee and the
Mpumalanga Provincial Department of Health in South
Africa as well as the Institutional Review Board of the
University of Connecticut.
