The most famous of these drums have been found in Vietnam, but many are known from Indonesia too.The Vietnamese drums are called Dong-Son drums (named after the site in Vietnam where some were discovered). It is believed that people played these drums in rituals to call forth rain.We can see various designs on the drums, such as geometric patterns, daily life and warfare, animals, boats, and birds. From this, we can infer the sense of unity with the natural surround that people felt in calling forth rain. This is also consistent with an animistic worldview, in which spirits are always present in nature, and can be contacted to bring about desired results. These drums were used as long ago as 2500 years ago. Although fairly rare today, they are still valued in certain areas. For example, on the island of Alor these so-called moko drums are still used as symbols of status in society. They are commonly sought as part of bridal dowry in marriages there.Dowry means that the wife’s family provides some amount of wealth to the husband’s family as a form of livelihood for her after marriage.
