The Youth Risk Behavior Survey was administered
to students by Department of Education
staff in selected classrooms. Parental
consent was not required, although some districts
notified parents and gave them the option
of refusing to allow their child to participate.
Standardized instructions given to the
students described the survey’s purpose and
the confidential and voluntary nature of the
study. HIV education teachers were mailed surveys
and asked to return them within 2 weeks.
A follow-up postcard and a second survey were
sent 2 and 3 weeks later to nonresponding
teachers.
