Wat Arun Rajwararam is the royal temple of the special first class. It is located in Arun Amarin Road, on the shore of Thonburi River. It is opposite to Wat Pho. Visitors can cross the river at Tha Tien pier. It is the ancient temple built in Krungsri Ayutthaya period. Its former name is Wat Makok. Later, in Thonburi era, people called this temple “Wat Chaeng”.

When Prince Isara Sunthorn succeeded the throne as King Buddha Loetla Nabhalai. There was a large repair. It has become the royal temple of King Buddha Loetla Nabhalai. When the repair was completed, King Buddha Loetla Nabhalai gave the name “Wat Arun Rajwararam” to this temple. Later, he thought about lifting the level of pagoda but the era ended before the construction started.
In the era of King Nangklao, the big pagoda was lifted to be 82 meters high and 234 meters wide. The crown made for the main Buddha statue in Wat Nang Nong was allowed to be applied on the top of the pagoda. The construction was completed in the era of King Vajchiravudh (Rama VI). Moreover, the repair was done in many parts of the temple in the era of King Chulalongkorn. The relics of King Buddha Loetla Nabhalai was located in the base of the Buddha statue in the monastery of this temple in this era too. The new name “Wat Arun Rajwararam” was given when the repair was completed. The abbot nowadays is Phra Thep Mongkol Rangsee. His former name was Chaliao. His name in Buddhism is Thitapunyo. His surname is Panjamawat.
