Too much sugar in the blood means the body will begin breaking down fats, which produces a toxic waste product called ketone. Although the body will initially try to get rid of ketones through the urine, it may be unable to keep up. Diabetics, whose bodies cannot produce enough insulin to control blood sugar levels, are at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis – this dangerous condition occurs when the ketones are too concentrated in the blood. The person may slip into a coma or die.
