This analysis is part of a larger prospective, longitudinal
study that described pain, sleep, and fatigue in school-age
children and adolescents with ALL and their parents. Thirty-
eight children and adolescents with a new diagnosis of ALL
were recruited from two regional children's cancer centers in
the Pacific Northwest. The study was approved by the
institutional review boards at both centers. Children and
adolescents needed to read, speak, and understand English
and were excluded if they had a chronic illness that required
daily medications (e.g., juvenile rheumatoid arthritis,
diabetes) or if they were cognitively impaired as reported
in the medical record. Oral assent from the child and written
consent from a parent or legal guardian were obtained for
children and adolescents 7 to 17 years of age. Written
consent was obtained from 18-year-old adolescents. Most of
the eligible participants were healthy before their ALL
diagnosis. For this study, one adolescent was excluded due to
cognitive impairment, and no participants were excluded due
to the presence of comorbid illness.
