(evergreen rain forest) but a few occur in climates with a marked dry season of one to a few months duration (semi-evergreen rain forest).Agathis occur up to about 2000-2500 m elevation in lowland, lower montane and upper montane rain forest (forest formations are defined here andthroughout as in Whitmore 1975a). In the lowlands
they occur on a diversity of rocks and soils including podzolized sands (in heath forest), ultrabasics, limestone,igneous and sedimentary rocks and either in stands where they are the only top of canopy species or as scattered groves or as scattered individual trees.
