Leprosy (โรคเรื้อน)
The most serious form of Hansen’s disease is lepromatous leprosy, characterized by folded, bulblike lesions on the body,
especially on the face and extremities. The lesions are due to the growth of M. leprae cells in the skin and may contain up to 109
bacterial cells per gram of tissue. Like other
mycobacteria, M. leprae from the lesions stain deep. Lepromatous leprosy has a very poor prognosis. In severe cases the disfiguring lesions lead to destruction of peripheral nerves and loss of motor function.
