The subject of hypotheses 8 to 11 is the internal organization of SMOs. If the
income flow to a SMO is large, the cadre and staff will become professional and
these groups will become relatively large. The reason is that organizational problems
amount and that these are solved more likely by full time personnel (hypothesis
8). Hypothesis 9 states: The larger the SMSs and SMIs become, the more likely
it is that careers will become possible within SMOs. What are the consequences if
a SMO is supported by isolated constituents? Hypothesis 10 asserts that such SMOs
recruit beneficiary constituent workers “for strategic purposes rather than for organizational
work” (1235). “Beneficiary constituent workers” are persons who provide
resources and profit if the movement accomplishes its goals. The hypothesis
maintains that these persons are used to wield influence outside the organization.
The reason is probably that for those SMOs soliciting outside resources is more
important than internal organizational work.
