Fluid restriction as a standard treatment
is not advisable, and there are no studies
proving its efficacy in the management of
ascites (Runyon 2013). Fluid restriction
may exacerbate the severity of central
hypovolaemia, which may increase the
secretion of antidiuretic hormone and result in
a further deterioration in renal function. Fluid
restriction may be recommended if dilutional
hyponatraemia of less than 130mmol/L is
present; however, it must always be used with
caution (Garcia-Tsao 2011).
