PACS installations will have one or more reading areas set up for reading images, either by modality (e.g., MRI reading area, CT reading area, or CR reading area) or by anatomy (e.g., body reading area, neuro reading area, bone reading area). System requirements will determine networking cabling parameters (e.g., fiber or category-5 twisted-pair cable). It is good planning to include additional cable drops whenever cabling is first installed or upgraded. Most systems are flexible enough to allow reading from any primary diagnostic workstation, although some modalities might require specialized workstations. For
example workstations for ultrasound and nuclear medicine studies utilize color displays, and some MRI and CT studies require 3-D and other more sophisticated tools.
