Vaivre-Douret et al83 documented the importance of frequent
position changes and functional postural support enabling spontaneous
motor activity for normal neuromuscular and osteoarticular
function in low-risk preterm infants aged 31 to 36 weeks'
gestation. The connection between motor development and neurodevelopmental
outcome has been well documented in the
literature and summarized by Monterosso et al84; NICU nurses must
take special care to incorporate postural interventions when caring for
VLBW infants to promote the development of optimal posture and
motor skills.
