Oysters have high calcium carbonate content and also contain rare impurities that improve strength as well. X-ray diffraction results shown in the “Yoon” study, show that the shell is composed of 96% Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3). (Yoon, 2002) Calcium Carbonate is a widely used filler in a number of applications as a polymer. Adding CaCO3 to polymer resins, such as polyester coating materials, will act as a fire retardant and enhance product performance against chemical and heat corrosion. Calcium Carbonate is also cost effective because it is so readily available (Fillite Extendosphere, n.d.).
