Following this empirical research presentation, the colloquium started with an inspiring
theory session by Bonnie Meekums (UK), Marianne Eberhard (Germany) and Malvern Lumsden
(Norway). Bonnie Meekums initiated her presentation “Is D/MT a psychotherapy in its own
right?” with a discussion of the power of metaphor, and an overview of the change processes identified in her prior work (Meekums, 2002). Her work has expanded, to take further account of the therapeutic relationship at each stage of development. From there she developed the theory, making use of evidence based information that addresses the challenge of discovering the unique psychotherapeutic nature of D/MT. The following questions were addressed: How is metaphor significant in the normal and abnormal development of the individual? How is experience embodied? What is the role of the creative process in the development of self?
