Abstract
Interactions among herbivores or between herbivores and other plant natural enemies, such as fungal pathogens, range from competition to facilitation. Moreover, the outcome of these interactions depends on the ecological context where they occur. In this study we examined the effects of clipping, as a surrogate of herbivory by ungulates, on the damage caused by two types of natural enemies (herbivorous insects and foliar fungal pathogens) on bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus, in combination with nitrogen (N) fertilization representing current N atmospheric deposition. To examine whether the responses of both these natural enemies were mediated by changes in the plant, we estimated the effects of the treatments on bilberry growth and branching and on chlorophyll content as proxy of N content in leaves. Clipping increased the proportion of leaves damaged by herbivorous insects regardless of whether it was combined with N fertilization or not in 2008. In 2007 and 2009 repeated damage to the shrub also facilitated insect herbivory but only under N applications. Regarding fungal infestation incidence, clipping decreased the proportion of infected leaves in all the years considered but only in fertilized plots. Our results suggest that vertebrate herbivores facilitate insect herbivory and reduce fungal infestation but that these effects are dependent on nutritional conditions. Moreover, we found a negative residual correlation between insect herbivory and fungal infestation on bilberry leaves. Therefore, interactions between insect herbivores and fungal pathogens could be implicated in the final outcome of interactions between browsing ungulates and both bilberry natural enemies.

Introduction
Interactions among herbivores range from competition to facilitation. When one species reduces food resources below the level necessary to sustain another species, both species compete. Alternatively, the use of resources by one species may increase the quantity or quality of food resources for other species, leading to a facilitation process (Arsenault & Owen-Smith 2002). The relative importance of these two processes and their effect on plant performance remains unclear.
Large mammalian herbivores not only reduce plant biomass available for other herbivores but also activate plant induced-defences (Bryant, 1981, Bryant et al., 1983 and Karban and Baldwin, 1997), which may decrease herbivory by other plant host, e.g. insects, through a competition process. On the contrary, according to Arsenault and Owen-Smith (2002) feeding facilitation can arise in two different ways: first, when herbivory by one species makes plant resources accessible to another species, or second, when herbivory by one species enhances the nutritional quality through plant regrowth for another species. In addition, competitive and facilitative interactions may occur between herbivores and other plant enemies, such as plant pathogens (Daleo et al. 2009). In fact, both insect herbivores and fungal pathogens utilizing the same host plant species could respond to quantity and/or quality changes after ungulate herbivory, leading to a triple interaction system. However, the indirect interactions that have been found between both insects and pathogens due to synergies and/or antagonisms among signalling pathways in plant resistance (Lappalainen et al., 1995, Hatcher and Paul, 2000 and Mouttet et al., 2011) could disguise a direct effect of large herbivores on both insects and pathogens.
An increasing number of studies have shown interactions between mammalian and insect herbivores feeding on the same host plant. The effect of vertebrate herbivores on insect abundance and/or richness can be negative (e.g. Baines et al., 1994, Dennis et al., 1998 and Gómez and González-Megías, 2007) or positive (e.g. Roininen et al., 1997, Olofsson and Strengbom, 2000 and Bailey and Whitham, 2006). However, in the case of studies demonstrating facilitation between vertebrate and insect herbivores, the focus is usually on gall forming insects. With respect to fungal pathogens, even though vertebrate grazing has been reported to reduce levels of infestation by fungi in grassland ecosystems (Bowers and Sacchi, 1991 and Wennström and Ericson, 1991), the possible effects of vertebrate herbivores on fungal pathogens remains poorly studied.
In general, the outcome of the interactions, such as competition and facilitation, depends on the ecological context where they occur, in such a way that a potential competition process could in fact become positive under specific circumstances. For instance, Cheng and Ritchie (2006) found that habitat productivity and herbivore densities may mediate shifts between facilitative and competitive interactions between cattle and prairie dogs. Similar results were reported for interactions between herbivores from distantly related taxa. Thus, Suominen, Persson, Danell, Bergström, and Pastor (2008) showed that the impact of moose on invertebrate richness depended on site productivity in such a way that high productivity seems to be able to buffer negative impacts of high moose density. Additionally, a spatio-temporal variability in the outcome of interactions between ungulates and epigeal arthropods has been reported by González-Megías, Gómez, and Sánchez-Piñero (2004).
As the outcome of interactions varies according to ecological contexts, global change drivers could be tested as possible sources determining these contexts. Nitrogen (N) atmospheric deposition due to human activities is resulting in fertilization of ecosystems worldwide (Vitousek et al., 1997 and Sala et al., 2000). Also, as a consequence of climate warming and changes in land use, it is accepted that the extent of vertebrate herbivory is increasing within ecosystems due to a wider phenological window for herbivory, reduced mortality of herbivores during mild winters (Côté, Rooney, Tremblay, Dussault, & Waller 2004) and to a trophic downgrading (Estes et al. 2011).
In a scenario of global change, the ecological context determining plant performance could be influenced by both extent of vertebrate herbivory and N fertilization, which, moreover, may interact in their effects on plants (Gough and Grace, 1998, Strengbom et al., 2003 and Britton and Fisher, 2007). On the other hand, besides direct effects on plants, both factors might influence the outcome of interactions between plants and other natural enemies. Specifically, simulation of vertebrate herbivory under different nutritional conditions provides an appropriate scenario to assess possible interactions between herbivores from distantly related taxa, and between ungulates and foliar fungal pathogens.
The main goal of our study was to examine the importance of competition vs facilitation between ungulates and other natural enemies (insect herbivores and fungal pathogens) sharing a common host plant, bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus (L.), and how these interactions can be modified by N fertilization. Previous studies on bilberry have reported that N fertilization increased plant quality by increasing amino acid concentration ( Strengbom et al., 2002 and Nordin et al., 2005) and decreasing certain chemical defence compounds ( Strengbom et al., 2003, Witzell and Shevtsova, 2004 and Nordin et al., 2005). Damage by foliar pathogenic fungi and from Lepidoptera larvae also increased after experimental N additions ( Nordin et al., 1998, Strengbom et al., 2002 and Nordin et al., 2005). Furthermore, both clipping and N fertilization applied together led to increases in bilberry preference by mammal herbivores (Strengbom et al. 2003). Therefore, we examined the following questions: (1) Does clipping, as a surrogate of ungulate herbivor
