1. Photocopy the list of names and addresses given (unless you need typing
practice!). Cut each filing group apart and transfer it to its own 3x5-inch
card. These cards will become a file to manipulate in several ways.
a) Arrange the file alphabetically, word by word, disregarding punctuation,
conjunctions, and apostrophe-s ('s). Hyphenated words are filed
as two words. Acronyms and initials are filed as "nothing before
something" rule. File surnames, first names. Interfile names and
phrases. Answers are given on pages 251-52.
b) Go through your file and write on a sheet of paper all the policies you
used to create your file.
c) Take the file and rearrange alphabetically word by word with individuals'
names coming before phrases. File hyphenated words as one
word. Acronyms and initials should be filed as words. File ampersands
and conjunctions as words. Do not disregard them. Answers
are given on pages 252-53.
d) Check your file for any additional policies you might have used to
create your filing list.
