C. Practicing the Writing Process
Read a student’s prediction of a new plant.
A new plant is going to be popular. It s called tomana. It is a combination of a tomato and a banana. The tomana looks like red banana but it smells like a tomato. The outside peel (skin) is very thick and protects the fruit inside. It is easy to peel the tomana. When you remove the peel, you have a perfect tomata/banana. It is easy to slice the peeled tomana for salads or sandwiches.
1 Exploring Ideas: Free Writing. One way to get ideas is to “freewrite.” When you freewrite, you write for ten minutes about your idea. Do not worry about your spelling and grammar. Just try to get a lot of ideas down. Your teacher does not correct or look at a freewrite.
The purpose of a freewrite is simply to help you get ideas. Sometimes, if you can’t think of anything to say, just write “I can’t think of anything to say” many times. The main thing is to keep on writing. For example, you can write about a new combination of two fruits or vegetables. What does the new fruit or vegetables look like? What does it smell like? What does it taste like?
Now tell your partner about your prediction but don’t read your free write aloud but just use its ideas.
When we want to describe someone or something, we often make a comparison between two persons or things using verbs of perception (smell, feel, look, sound, taste) with the word like.
Example: My sister looks like my mother.
Think about your prediction. Can you complete this sentence about it?
It looks like _______________________________________________
What does it smell like? What does it sound, feel or taste like?
