The main ergot alkaloids produced by Claviceps species are ergometrine, ergotamine, ergosine, ergocristine, ergokryptine, and ergocornine ( Fig. 1), and the group of agroclavines, the latter being less toxic. Ergot alkaloids that have a double bond between C9 and C10 (known as ergolenes) undergo epimerization, with respect to the centre of symmetry at C8, resulting in rotating (C8-(S) configuration) isomers.
