3.1.3. Scavenging activity on hydroxyl radical of ethanolic extract
Hydroxyl radical, the most reactive radical known, can attack
and damage almost every bio-macromolecule in living cells. The
best characterized biological damage caused by hydroxyl radical
is its capacity to stimulate lipid peroxidation, which occurs when
hydroxyl radical is generated close to membranes and attacks the
fatty acid side chains of the membrane phospholipids (Valko
et al., 2007). As shown in Fig. 2B, the scavenging activities of ethanolic
extract and Vc increased with the increase of concentrations.
At the concentration of 0.5 mg/mL, the scavenging activity for
ethanolic extract and Vc was 28.35% and 95.38%, respectively. In
addition, Vc showed higher hydroxyl radical scavenging activity
than ethanolic extract (p < 0.05). The IC50 values for ethanolic extract
and Vc were 5.23 and 0.15 mg/mL, respectively. The studied
