Gatineau Police said the 39-year-old was arrested shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday after an officer saw a man sitting in the driver’s seat of a car parked on Riviera Street in Gatineau. It was the second time the officer had cruised past the vehicle, but this time the officer stopped for a look, detected a strong smell of alcohol, and decided to give the occupant a breath test, which, according to police, he failed. He also failed a similar test at the police station after being taken into custody. Police also found a knife in the car. Police said Brazeau had given a previous undertaking not to possess any weapon capable of cutting.
Because police believed he had broken a previous undertaking, they asked a justice of the peace to authorize them to keep him in jail overnight. Brazeau spent the night at the Hull Detention Centre. Brazeau faces a variety of charges, including being impaired while in control of a vehicle, operating a vehicle while having an alcohol level of more than 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood, and breach of conditions on a previous charge. His car has now been impounded for 30 days and his driver’s licence is suspended for 90 days.
