When an individual decides to join a school system, for example, there is an implied assumption that he or she will accept the doctrinal components of the authority system (traditions, policies, rules, regulations, norms, job specifications, patterns of behavior, codes of ethics). There are occasions, however, when either the employee or the administration does not accept or consent to the bases on which authority rests. Under certain circumstances (Figure 10.7) the school system can exercise its authority to influence member behavior through the authority system.
