Regarding anticholinesterase activity, it was observed that the inhibitory action of this enzyme must occur through a synergistic mechanism between the major and minor components, being piperitenone oxide, menthofuran, 1,8-cineole and limonene major components, as observed for M.piperita (chocolate mint) and M. spicata (menthol mint). The results of antioxidant and AChE inhibitory activities could explain the main use of plants of the genus Mentha in the treatment of gastrointestinal tract disorders, since inflammatory action in gastric tract mucous membrane is associated with oxidative stress and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors may help in the treatment of intestinal
motility disorders. The antifungal properties of Mentha essential
oils were considered moderate. The presence of pulegone in oil
composition is directly related to its antifungal properties, as highlighted in M. spicata (Ciudad del Leste mint).
