Interestingly, the case of hepatic alveolar hydatid disease in
the aforementioned dog in British Columbia occurred in an animal
that had never left that province. Furthermore, the parasite
was shown to be genetically most closely related to European
rather than North American strains (10). The origin of the case
described here is unclear, as only formalin-fixed tissues were
available and genotyping PCR analysis, as described in Jenkins
et al (10), was not successful.
