Discussion of Results
From the experiment the sulfur dioxide concentration of gas sample group 4 is 7.7016 ppm or mg/L. The value of our sample is lower than the ambient air quality standard which is 0.17 ppm. Normally, NO2 is recognized to be considerably more toxic than nitric oxide, a chemical reagent, specific for NO2 is desirable.
In the experiment, porous material is used to make air bubbles of NO2 gas sample due to its low ability in dissolving in the absorbent. From the experiment, after NO2 has been dissolved into the adsorbent, it chances the adsorbent’s color (colorless) into light violet color. However, the color chance depends on human eyesight. Some people can detect well, but some people can not.
The major source of NO2 is from motor vehicle and atmospheric transformation, etc. and also come from the internal combustion engines running at high temperature and the power generation stations which use fossil-fuel. However, the nitrogen oxides in nature could be produced from the biological decomposition of nitrite under acid conditions. In the air pollution studies, NO2 is one of the most considered pollutants because it is able to absorb the solar energy and initiate photochemical reactions in the presence of hydrocarbons, organic acid, aldehydes and ozone. Especially, in the presence sunlight, much chemical reaction can be take place. Similar to SO2, high concentration of NO2 in the ambient air can also cause the acid rain that will damage plants and soils, contaminate water and corrode the buildings.
