When
the
mucilage
is
more
resistant
to
degradation,
it may
result
in
expansive
floating
mats
which
have
been
periodically
observed
in the
northern
Adriatic Sea,
and
seafoam
which
typically
washes
ashore
on
intertidal
sand
beaches
of the
North Sea.
The
adverse
effects
of
blooms
may
be
further
complicated
when
the
major
bloom
microorganism(s)
produce
and/or
release
toxins
which
adversely
affect
other
organisms
and/or
human.
These
have
been
the
subject
of much
study
in
recent
years.
