This paper exam ines w hich factors determine the parti cipation of households in long term
contracting with local farmer s. Are households motivated by reducing the environmental
impacts of their food consumptio n? A discrete -choice model of community suppor ted
agriculture (CSA) participation is applied to a sample of 264 French households. The findings
suggest that difficult-to-me asure attributes, not ably environmental consid erations play a
major role in explaini ng CSA participat ion.
