Adipic acid is most important for the manufacture of nylon 6,6; that is, up to about 70% of the total production (e. g., in 1995 in the USA, Western Europe, and Japan, 68%, 46%, and 33%, respectively) can go into nylon 6,6 mainly for fibers. Adipic acid is used not only as the acid component, but also to a large extent as a precursor for the diamine component (cf: Section 10.2.1).
