Out of 40 countries assessed in the latest global index ranking published by British education and
publishing group, Pearson Plc., Thailand’s education system is ranked 37th. Finland came in first place
followed by South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.
The Thai Government and MOE are aggressively addressing this situation albeit from a position of
catch up. One of the goals is to provide at least one native English speaking teacher to every
government school in Thailand. It is not just English that is being taught by native English speaking
teachers. There is now a proliferation in the number of schools and trial programs within schools and
universities throughout Thailand, seeking to teach other subjects in English that were traditionally only
taught in Thai.
