Araucaria cones
Araucarias are dioecious - that is, they produce
male (pollen) cones and female (seed) cones on
separate trees. When the smaller male cones
are mature, the woody scales open to allow the
tiny pollen to blow away and reach the female
cones. Later, the female cones open to let their
ripe seeds disperse in the wind. These fossil
cones of the species Pararaucaria patagonia are
from the Cerro Cuadrado region of Argentina.
