Cauliflower is considered a fussy crop for home gardeners, but less so if we give up our obsession with pure-white curds. Its genetics include other colors, hence the newly popular varieties that are purple, orange and lime green. So when a whole row of our Snow Crown cauliflower turned up with little purple crevices throughout its heads, I wondered if this was a legitimate variation. No, it turned out to be a double defect to which Snow Crown is prone if the plants are under stress. It involves ricing, in which the crevices appear, along with the aberrant purple. Was this so bad?
