Some comets have shorter periods, ranging down to 3.3 years for Enke's Comet. Most of these short-- period comets come close to the orbit of Jupiter, suggesting that Jupiter's gravity has deflected them into new orbits that remain within the solar system. The most famous comet in this group is Halley's Comet , named after Edmund Halley ,a friend of Newton, who studied the records of comets dating back to 1531 and decided that several of these comets were a single body making a repeated appearance in the sky. Halley predicted that this comet would return in 1758,and it reappeared on Christmas night of that year. The last appearance of Halley's Comet was in 1986,and it's next appearance is scheduled for 2062.
