TOOL-M 17
COMPETENCY
Explain the use of a torque multiplier(s).
ADMINISTRATION
EXPLAIN: The Qualifier will have the employee explain the use of a torque multiplier(s). The Qualifier will have the employee explain torquing of one bolt using an X-4 multiplier, and one bolt using two stacked X¬4 multipliers. The employee will be allowed to use the equipment manufacturer’s manual to obtain torque specification and (Figure 3) for usage of an X-4 multiplier(s).
PROCEDURE
The employee will explain as follows: (Figures 3 and 4)
1. How/when to use multiplier torque wrench?
2. What is the tightening steps of 1250 ft/lb?
3. What should be extra precaution when using this tool?
NOTE: The steps listed below outline a generic procedure.
1. Obtain the desired torque on the bolts. Refer to the equipment manufacturer’s manual for torque specifications.
2. Determine the multiplier(s) needed using (Figure 3, Table 1).
3. Using the formula (Figure 3, Table 3, ), determine the required torque wrench reading.
4. Set the torque wrench to the desired setting. (Figure 4))
5. Arrange the multipliers if two or more are being used. (Figure 3, Table 4) Use an anti-backlash ratchet and adapter in the wrench arrangement when using a multiplier. The spring action in the multiplier’s gear teeth can constitute a safety hazard if the workman releases his handhold during tightening.
NOTE: A solid stop is required for the multiplier handles to rest against while torque is in progress.
6. Place the socket on the multiplier and fastener.
7. Pull steadily on the torque wrench handle until it clicks once.
8. Return the torque wrench to the lowest setting.
9. Store the torque wrench and multiplier(s).
NOTE: When torque multipliers are used, the reading of the torque wrench setting is not the actual torque exerted on the fastener. The ratio between the actual torque on the fastener and the torque shown on the torque wrench dial is determined by the Actual Mechanical Advantage of the multiplier or combination of multipliers.
