Metabolite analysis of Pseudomonas KA19
In qualitative tests, Pseudomonas KA19 produced orange
halos on an average of 10–15 mm diameter, whereas no
colour change in the medium was observed with Bacillus
SE. No changes were detected when non-deferrated medium was used for microbial growth. These results indicated
that the KA19 strain produced an extracellular siderophore,
which was strongly inhibitory to growth of Xcc in ironlimited conditions, whereas in iron-rich medium the inhibition was not significant.
As shown in Fig. 2, the high siderophore production was
obtained with succinate as a carbon source in the medium.
The siderophore production was reduced in presence of
[10 lM Fe (III), although cell growth reached a maximal
value (data not shown). Moreover, siderophore production
was evident at 250 lM Fe (III).
It was observed that the purified metabolite was a
greenish yellow substance miscible in water and soluble in
